Rakeem Hardy & Marcus "O.G." Paris

Cartographies of Presence: Live

Cartographies of Presence: Live invites artists Rakeem Hardy and Marcus “Ademi/O.G.” Paris to perform their movement scores, which were produced during an intensive research and development period where the artists were asked to respond to Paul Maheke’s exhibition, In spite of my own desire to see you disappear. These movement scores take the form of visual notations on a floor plan documenting the artists’ embodied explorations in Maheke’s sound installation, and are made publicly available at the gallery in the weeks ahead of Hardy and Paris’ performance for audiences to follow and interpret. At Cartographies of Presence: Live, Hardy and Paris will activate their scores, informed by their respective dance styles of contemporary and krump.

This event brings to surface one of Maheke’s prompts in his exhibition, which asks, “What types of resonance can be shared from knowing only partially?” Cartographies of Presence: Live extends this inquiry to the artist respondents and audience, having us witness the artists meet face-to-face for the first time as they perform their explorations of self, space, and each other.

Cartographies of Presence: Live is guest-curated by Dedra McDermott.
