fORUM is Mercer Union’s ongoing series of talks, lectures, interviews, screenings, and performances.
Led by artist Harold Offeh, this workshop playfully explores the potential of the camera, the smartphone, and the selfie stick to mediate our experience of the body through the expressions our actions and gestures transmit in the recorded image. Connections between the body, photography, and archival reproduction present in Aimée Zito Lema’s exhibition are extended in Offeh’s workshop to investigate the playful and pleasurable ways that self-portraiture and performance allow us to intervene into past archives and create new ones.
Building on Offeh’s study of strategies and methodologies used in the history of video art, dance, and performance for camera, participants in this workshop will explore the generative links between movement and live recording; allowing for speculative and spirited forms of choreography and performance to emerge. Open to everyone, no experience required. Participants will need a to join the workshop from a camera-enabled mobile phone, tablet, or laptop computer.
