Danielle Dean leads an artist talk about her ongoing research and practice, including an introduction to Hemel (2024), the ambitious new film and subject of her first exhibition in Canada, Out of this World. A semi-fictional portrait of the small English town where she was raised, Hemel is a short film that emerges from a series of projects examining historical representations and contemporary conditions of labour, racialized identity, and popular culture. Dean will discuss her longstanding interest in working closely with community to develop projects in collaboration with her subjects, and focus on related recent works that draw from archival materials, including film and advertising in order to unpack the ideological frameworks and imaginaries they sustain.
